The Silent Service — America's Nuclear Submarine Fleet

The United States Navy submarine force is known simply as The Silent Service — a name earned through decades of clandestine patrols conducted in total secrecy beneath the world's oceans. Since the commissioning of USS Nautilus (SSN-571) on September 30, 1954, the United States has built and operated more than 200 nuclear-powered submarines, establishing an unmatched tradition of undersea dominance that continues to this day.

The story of the American nuclear submarine is inseparable from the Cold War. For four decades, U.S. submarines conducted continuous deterrence patrols under the polar ice cap, tracked Soviet submarines through the world's ocean basins, and stood perpetually ready to execute nuclear strikes if ordered. The men of the submarine force — officers and enlisted sailors alike — carried this burden in silence, their missions classified, their sacrifices largely unknown to the public they protected.

USS Albuquerque (SSN-706) was commissioned into this tradition on May 21, 1983, at the height of the Reagan-era military buildup. She served through the final years of the Cold War, outlasted the Soviet Union she was built to oppose, fired Tomahawk cruise missiles in anger during Operation Noble Anvil over Kosovo in 1999, and continued serving the nation until her decommissioning on February 27, 2017. Her story — 34 years of continuous service — is the story of the American submarine force itself.

The U.S. nuclear submarine fleet is organized around two fundamentally different missions, reflected in two categories of vessels. Fast attack submarines (designated SSN) are the hunters — aggressive, high-speed boats designed to find and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships, conduct intelligence collection, support special operations forces, and strike land targets with cruise missiles. Ballistic missile submarines (designated SSBN), often called "boomers," carry the nation's most survivable nuclear deterrent, armed with submarine-launched ballistic missiles capable of hitting any target on earth.

A third category, the SSGN, represented nuclear-armed cruise missile submarines — originally Ohio-class SSBNs that were converted to carry up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles after the end of the Cold War reduced the required SSBN fleet size. The four SSGNs (USS Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Georgia) served as powerful conventional strike platforms before retiring.

The submarine classes documented on this site represent the full arc of American nuclear submarine development from the Cold War's peak to the 21st century: from the prolific Los Angeles class that gave USS Albuquerque her home, through the extraordinary Seawolf class, the workmanlike Virginia class, the massive Columbia class SSBN now under construction, and the yet-to-be-built SSN(X) that will carry the force into the 2040s and beyond.

SSN
Fast Attack Submarine

Nuclear-powered attack submarine. The hunter of the fleet. Designed to track and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships, launch Tomahawk cruise missiles against land targets, collect intelligence, and support special operations. USS Albuquerque (SSN-706) was a fast attack submarine.

SSBN
Ballistic Missile Submarine

Nuclear-powered submarine carrying submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) as the nation's most survivable nuclear deterrent. The Ohio class carried 24 Trident II D5 missiles; the incoming Columbia class carries 16. These submarines conduct deterrence patrols that can last 70+ days.

Guided Missile Submarine

Nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine. Four Ohio-class SSBNs were converted to SSGNs after the Cold War, each carrying up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and serving as special operations motherships. All four SSGNs have now been decommissioned, with no replacement currently planned.

Note on SSN-706 specifics: As a Flight I Los Angeles-class submarine, USS Albuquerque was not equipped with the vertical launch system (VLS) tubes that were added beginning with USS Pittsburgh (SSN-720). Her Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles were fired through the standard 533mm torpedo tubes — the same tubes she used to fire 10 Tomahawks during Operation Noble Anvil in 1999. The Legacy of SSN-706

She Was There

USS Albuquerque (SSN-706) was commissioned on May 21, 1983, at the height of the Cold War — when the Soviet Union was still very much the existential threat that shaped every aspect of American military planning. She was built to stalk Soviet submarines in the North Atlantic, to survive in the most contested undersea environment imaginable, and to carry the fight to an adversary that had built the largest submarine fleet in history.

She served through the climactic final decade of the Cold War, conducting deployments to the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Western Pacific that remain classified to this day. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, she outlasted the enemy she was designed to fight — and adapted. The 1990s brought new missions: humanitarian operations, peacetime engagement, and eventually real combat. In March 1999, she fired 10 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Serbian military targets as part of Operation Noble Anvil — the NATO air campaign over Kosovo. USS Albuquerque became a combat veteran.

She continued operating through the 2000s and into the 2010s, by which time the Virginia-class submarines that would eventually replace her Los Angeles-class sisters were already being commissioned in numbers. She underwent an Engineered Refueling Overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, received updated electronics and combat systems, and kept sailing. On February 27, 2017, she was decommissioned at Keyport, Washington, having served the United States Navy for 34 years.

USS Albuquerque was the bridge between the Cold War submarine force and the modern one. She connects the world of Admiral Rickover's S6G reactor to the S9G that powers the Virginia class. She links the era of Soviet ballistic missile submarines to the era of global terrorism and distributed maritime threats. She is part of a lineage that stretches back to USS Nautilus in 1954 and forward to the SSN(X) that will sail decades from now.
